History of the INSTITUTE

The Institute was founded by YWCA members of Freetown, Sierra Leone. It was opened in the YWCA building Brookfields on Wednesday 20th September 1961 after the building had been dedicated on the 19th September.

The number of pupils at the start was 33. By September 1966 the school had grown to 350 pupils. The board of management then consisted of 5 members. The school year comprised of three terms. The board of governors since its recognition by the Ministry of Education is made up of representatives of:

                Proprietors -5 members
                Local Community - 2 members
                Ministry of Education - 5 members
                Principal/secretary

By September 966 the school had grown to 366 pupils. The Principals who served the Institute are:


                Mrs. J. Amos-Cole (teacher-in-charge) - 1962
                Ms. L. Hamilton-Hazeley - 1965
                Mrs. E. O'Reilly-Wright  - 1966


In 1981, Mrs. S. V. Rogers-Wright took up the reigns of administration as principal.

The present number of students on roll is 500 for the day students and 250 for the evening students. The total staff number is approximately 50.

 

GENERAL REGULATIONS OF THE INSTITUTE

All new entrants are admitted as being on trial for the first year at the Institute. Continuation at the Institute will depend on satisfactory work and conduct.

Students are expected to make maximum attendance throughout the year as part of their course requirement and in any case not less than 85%

In cases of serious illness and/or hospitalization this must be supported by a medical certificate by recognised Medical Practitioner

Students are required to be punctual at all times both in attendance and for class work

A term's notice or a term's fee in lieu thereof is required of any student wishing to discontinue training

The principal reserves the right to institute any disciplinary measure she deems fit, on any girl who is guilty of serious misconduct. Misconduct includes any action that is likely to be detrimental to the moral or material welfare of any other student

There is provision within the 3 pronged programmes for students to transfer to another programme.

Each student must possess the specified textbooks and material

Students are required to participate in the extra curricular activities of the Institute

 


 

MISCELLANEOUS

 

Accommodation
The Institute provides up-to-date boarding facilities for a number of students of the Institute and schools within the neighbourhood.

 

Fees
All fees must be paid on or before the first day of term.

 

Library
The Institute provides adequate modern library facilities for reading, reference and research. An additional section on text book collect as a feeder sector to other schools and institutions.

 


 

Extra Curricular Activities


Students are encouraged to participate in various activities such as athletics, sports, music, drama, guiding, YWCA Programme, Youth Clubs, Red Cross Links and Scripture Union.
